A Pictorial Record of British Railways Standard Steam Locomotives, Volume Two, including War Department Heavy Goods Engines.
An excellent pictorial companion to volume one by the well acclaimed author, Edward Talbot, with seventeen railway books to his name.
The first of the British Railways Standard steam locomotives were introduced in 1951 and the last was built until 1960. Some had very short lives, indeed all were withdrawn by 1968 when standard gauge steam traction came to an end on BR. Some of these well loved designs were preserved and can still be enjoyed today.
In charge of design was R A Riddles, who had become famous as a result of his very capable wartime heavy goods 2-8-0s and 2-10-0s for use by the War Department (these heavy goods engines are also covered in this book).
The book is copiously illustrated. The various classes of British Railways Standard steam locomotives are all covered:-
-Express Passenger Locomotives-
Class '8' 4-6-2 No 71000 'Duke of Gloucester class'
Class '7' 4-6-2 No's 70000 to 70054 'Britannia class'
Class '6' 4-6-2 No's 72000 to 72009 'Clan class'
-Heavy Freight Locomotives-
Class '9F' 2-10-0 No's 92000 to 92250
-Mixed Traffic Locomotives-
Class '5' 4-6-0 No's 73000 to 73154
Class '4' 4-6-0 No's 75000 to 75079
Class '4' 2-6-0 No's 76000 to 76114
Class '3' 2-6-0 No's 77000 to 77019
Class '2' 2-6-0 No's 78000 to 78064
-Passenger Tank Locomotives-
Class '4' 2-6-4T No's 80000 to 80154
Class '3' 2-6-2T No's 82000 to 82044
Class '2' 2-6-2T No's 84000 to 84029
The heavy goods locomotives built during the Second World War are also covered by this pictorial book:-
2-8-0 War Department 'Austerity' BR No's 90000 to 90732
2-8-0 US Army Transport Corps 'S160' US Army No's 1600 to 5849
2-10-0 War Department 'Austerity' BR No's 90750 to 90774
The wartime heavy goods locomotives were loaned to railway companies in Britain before venturing abroad following 'D-day'. Some remained abroad, whilst others returned to Britain to become LNER or BR property. The last of the WD (Ministry of Supply) 2-8-0 locomotives remained in BR service until almost the end of steam.
The author also looks at the lesser known variations among the BR Standard classes. Those covered by the book include Caprotti valve gear, Franco-Crosi boilers and the headlamp fitted 9F which was used on the Lickey incline as a banking locomotive.
The story ends with a photograph taken at Swindon Works 20th March 1960 of the final BR Standard steam locomotive to be built, '9F' class 2-10-0 'Evening Star'.
The book contains a careful selection of photographs of all the BR Standard classes and the heavy goods locomotives, plus hitherto unpublished interesting drawings.
This book can be considered an important work on the subject.
