The British Railways 9F 2-10-0s are affectionately remembered by those who lived through their era. By British standards these were giants, but they were far from ugly and had a considerable turn of speed when required to haul express passenger trains. The class achieved notoriety when the last one emerged from Swindon works and was named 'Evening Star'. This was not just the last 9F to be built, it marked the end of British Rail steam locomotive construction.
In this his latest contribution to the hugely successful 'Power of' series, noted railway photographer and author Gavin Morrison turns his attention to this important, but often overlooked class. Using 250 mono illustrations from his own collection and from those of other noted railway photographers, he records the development and operational history of the class from their origins in the early 1950s through to their final withdrawal from main line service in the late 1960s and into preservation.
