The Schull & Skibbereen was a railway full of character. It operated in a moderately hostile geographical environment, was affected by a number of political situations and was bankrupt for almost all of its existence. Despite all of this, the line provided a vital service to the local populace until it was replaced by road transport.
The location of the line was picturesque and the trains themselves were a delight - unusual steam engines pulling a variety of quaint vehicles (including four wheel passenger coaches). Quite a few passengers were amazed when their train departed from Skibbereen in reverse, before reaching the point where the line to Schull could be taken with the locomotive travelling forwards.
The earliest locomotives were steam trams, with side skirts down to near ground level. Later locomotives were 4-4-0Ts and, to add variety, an 0-4-4T. Drawings of each locomotive type appear in the book, along with drawings of carriages and goods vehicles. These will appeal to both historians and railway modellers.
This is the definitive book about this railway. It is up to Mr Boyd's usual high standards, his previous works being on the Isle of Man Railway and narrow gauge railways in North Wales.
