80% of the 4,500 metre gauge steam locomotives of India were built in Britain and 10% were built in India itself (Ajmer). Engines of Burma are included in the book. The locomotives look basically familiar to British eyes, but are vaguely exotic.
A wide variety of locomotive types is covered, due to the metre gauge railway's habit of ordering small batches of locomotives, each batch being different to previous ones. The previous lack of information about these engines makes this book somewhat special.
Each railway company is dealt with in turn, including a complete list of locomotives, builders, makers numbers, renumberings and historical notes. One chapter lists, for the first time, all the locomotives supplied in 1872-1885 for the Indian State Railways.
Few people are aware that Indian metre gauge locomotives were pressed into war service in 1915-1919. Departure and return dates are given for the locomotives sent to Mesopotamia (now Iraq) and to East Africa. Other engines toiled at industrial plants and are covered in the book.
