The Central American country of Costa Rica had a network of 3 ft. 6 in. gauge railways, built by four companies, with a large number of 2 ft. gauge feeders. There were also two isolated 3 ft 6 in. gauge common carrier lines built by the United Fruit Company, the banana plantation multinational, with over a hundred miles of track in each. One of these was linked to a short three foot gauge plantation railway by two aerial ropeways across a river. There were also some remote and isolated 2 ft gauge lines linking small plantations to barge docks on the Pacific coast. Two Panama-based 3 ft gauge lines crossed the common border to link plantations in Costa Rica with deepwater ports in their home country. These lines did not meet the Costa Rican national network, although the line on the south coast met one of the unconnected 3 ft 6 in. gauge plantation lines.
This book is a general introduction to those lines and their history, which starts in the 1870?s. It includes notes on street tramways and the diesel powered monorails which have replaced field tramways in the banana plantations in recent times. All of the available information on locomotive rosters is given in a comprehensive appendix.
