As we approach the new millennium, it is an opportune time to look back and survey how public transport policy in Ireland, north and south, has developed during the twentieth century. This book looks specifically at the interaction between rail passenger services and the introduction of bus competition from 1900. The book has two distinct parts.
Chapters 1-3 and 8 survey the development of transport policy in both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland between 1900 and 2000. This includes all major reports and inquiries into public transport, with pointers to future developments.
Chapters 4-7 detail the various self-propelled passenger rail vehicles developed to meet road competition and describes the bus fleets developed by the railways to enable integration of rail and road services in their areas of operation. The bus fleets of the IOC, NIRTB, UTA and CIE are also briefly covered.
