This book is undoubtedly the Saxon Court team's favourite railway title because it contains a seemingly never ending stream of excellent drawings of unusual early steam locomotives.
Crampton designed locomotives which overcame perceived problems, such as the need for a large firebox without this being close to an axle. The resulting locomotives were very unusual to modern eyes, yet they put in sterling service on main lines such as the London and North Western Railway and the South Eastern Railway. It is perhaps unfortunate that British enthusiasts have to travel deep into France to see a preserved example of Crampton's work.
A book for railway enthusiasts to browse through and for railway modellers to revel in. This is a beautifully presented volume on a unique subject.
