The Big Four railway companies were created in 1923 and lasted until the formation of British Railways in 1948. One of the reasons for the amalgamation of so many railway companies just four was that the government had found it difficult to co-ordinate the efforts of so many railway companies in support of military operations during the First World War.
There were some surprises when the Big Four were formed, for instance it was widely expected that the lines in Scotland would be amalgamated into a single company, but in the event they were split between two companies. The Big Four companies which were formed in 1923 were the Great Western Railway, London Midland & Scottish Railway, London & North Eastern Railway and the Southern Railway. This colour album illustrates superbly the diversity of their equipment.
