Classes D38 to D48 - The GNSR 4-4-0s. Compiled by W B Yeadon.
The GNSR (Great North of Scotland Railway) 4-4-0s tended to be handsome and distinctive machines. A few of the class D40s were named, including one that carried "Gordon Highlander" nameplates (GNSR 49, LNER 6849, LNER 1947 renumbering scheme 2277, BR 62277). Of recent years she this locomotive has been on display at the Glasgow Transport Museum.
Whilst the GNSR was far from being the most prosperous railway company line it used the 4-4-0s amongst to power amongst other workings passenger trains radiating from Aberdeen and fish traffic from Fraserburgh.
Many of the GNSR 4-4-0s were built by locomotive manufacturers in Glasgow, but others were built at the GNSR's own works at Inverurie. Famous GNSR locomotive superintendents include William Pickersgill and T E Haywood.
GNSR locomotives carried a green livery, which lasted on many examples for quite a few years after the 1923 grouping had resulted in the company becoming part of the LNER (London & North Eastern Railway). Photographs in the book show 4-4-0s in GNSR, LNER and BR liveries at a variety of locations.
