Volume 42a North British 4-4-0s Part 1 D25, D26, D27. D28, D29 & D30. Compiled by W B Yeadon.
The principal NBR (North British Railway) passenger trains were hauled by 4-4-0 tender locomotives for many years. This book covers the classes from D25 up to D30.
LNER class D25 were designed by M Holmes. The first was built in 1886 as NBR class N, and the last was withdrawn in 1933. Holmes also designed the NBR class K 4-4-0 tender locomotives, which later became LNER class D26. The first was built in 1902 and the last was withdrawn in 1926.
The first of a long line of NBR 4-4-0 designs was NBR class M, which were also known as "Abbotsfords". These were designed by Dougal Drummond and the first was introduced in 1877. These became LNER classes D27 and D28.
W P Reid designed the NBR J class 4-4-0, also known as the "Scott" class because they carried names from the novels of Sir Walter Scott. They became LNER class D29. The first was introduced in 1909 and the last was withdrawn in the early BR steam era. Some of the class were superheated, and these became LNER class D30.
