North British 4-4-0s Part 2 D31, D32, D33, D34, D35 & D36. Compiled by W B Yeadon.
This book continues coverage of the NBR (North British Railway) 4-4-0 tender locomotives from volume 42A. LNER class D31 4-4-0s were designed by M Holmes as NBR class M. They had 6'6" diameter driving wheels. The class M locomotives were actually rebuilds of three types of steam locomotive, the class "574", class "633" and class "729".
W P Reid designed the NBR K class locomotives with 6'0" driving wheels. In LNER days these became classes D32, D33 and D34 (the "Glens").
The NBR class N 4-4-0s were designed by M Holmes for use on the West Highland line, which gave rise to their nickname of "West Highland Bogies". In LNER days these became class D35.
NBR 695 was designed by M Holmes and was the only member of class L, which later became LNER class D36 number 9695. It was scrapped in 1944 after being used in ARP (Air Raid Precautions) exercises.
