A classic journey filmed from the cab of equally classic Brush type 4 diesel locomotive number 47517 on 23rd September 1985. This was before electrification of the East Coast route (ECML) had been completed, and many items of the old infrastructure from steam and diesel days remained in place.

Departure is at 15:35 from London's Kings Cross station and the train soon enters the series of tunnels that characterise the approach to this terminus. The Great Northern Railway (GNR) line out of Kings Cross in previous days was the route of famous trains, including the world renowned "Flying Scotsman". It was also home to Nigel Gresley's renowned class A3 and streamlined class A4 express steam locomotives, many of which were appropriately named after winning racehorses.

Places of note along the route include the Welwyn Viaduct and Abbots Ripton. It was at Abbots Ripton in 1876 that blizzard conditions caused a signal to freeze in the "line clear" position with disastrous results which directly led to the adoption by the GNR of somersault semaphore signals, in order to avoid any repeat of the incident.

Famous locations along the route include Stoke Bank, where LNER 4468 "Mallard" on 3rd July 1938 broke the world steam speed record at over 126 mph (202 kph), a record which has never since been bettered. The route appropriately includes Doncaster, where "Mallard" and her sister locomotives were designed and built.

The final part of this programme is along the former North Eastern Railway (NER) line through the Vale of York as far as the gracefully curved platform at York station.

Previously released in video format as part of the Railscene cab ride series.
