This programme is a cab ride along a truly scenic route through the Highlands of Scotland. It was filmed from the cab of a class 158 diesel multiple unit (DMU) in February 1994.
From the start of the journey as far as Stanley Junction is along the former Caledonian Railway (CR), but from then on the great bulk of the trip is along the former Highland Railway (HR).
Highlights of the journey include the snow around the summit of the route, the continued use of semaphore signalling on part of the line and the distinctive HR station architecture.
The natural sounds of the DMU cab form the soundtrack to this journey, including discussions in the cab.
