The bold sight and purposeful sound of the class 55 diesel-electric Deltic locomotives on the East Coast Main Line (ECML) is documented in this programme, using film from the period 1978 to 1981.
This programme is devoted to recordings made on the northern part of the route between York and Edinburgh. The tracks formerly belonged to the North Eastern Railway (NER) and the North British Railway (NBR).
A celebration of the locomotives which brought about shorter journey times than their steam predecessors. Today's electrified ECML is a fast and efficient railway, but it lacks the visual and acoustic spectacle of the Deltics. This programme faithfully captures the Deltic era.
