The Talyllyn Railway is rightly famous for it's endearing steam locomotives and the wonderful Welsh scenery. It is also of great historical importance, having been the very first railway in the world to be preserved. Now known as one of the 'Great Little Trains of Wales', the Talyllyn was rescued in 1950 by enthusiasts and was the first railway preservation society to be formed.

The concept of preserving a railway was so revolutionary at the time that Ealing Studios were inspired by the efforts of the Talyllyn preservationists to make the film 'The Titfield Thunderbolt', about the preservation of a fictitious standard gauge line.

Graham Whistler filmed this tribute to the famous narrow gauge railway in July 1990, when it was celebrating its 40th year of preservation. The programme combines plenty of lineside action with driver's eye views from the footplate of 0-4-0T No.1 'Talyllyn'. A celebration of steam, narrow gauge charm and glorious Welsh scenery.
