The long-serving Class 37, formerly known as the English Electric Type 3, railway locomotives have an extensive following. Some hauled passenger trains but the great majority of sightings of these machines in service was on freight trains.
At one time the class were predominantly allocated to the Eastern and Western Regions of British Rail, but later could be seen anywhere in Britain (and some could even be seen in France on high speed line construction).
Strangely, some Class 37 locos were converted into freight wagons. The bodywork between the cabs was cut away and the unpowered remains of the locomotive were used as a wagon to carry locomotive engine blocks between repair centres.
The rate of withdrawal of Class 37 locomotives increased following the turn of the century. Fortunately this DVD is a lasting legacy of this popular class, showing them in use from Scotland to the south of England on both passenger and freight trains, some on preserved lines.
