Something more powerful than the Brush Type 4 (Class 47) diesel locomotive was required by British Rail, and the well-known distinctive Class 56 was the result. This DVD shows them in action.
Not all of the class were constructed in Britain, some of them being built in Bucharest, Roumania. Unfortunately these foreign-built celebrities did not last long in traffic due to high maintenance costs brought about by poor materials and poor workmanship. However, the British-built members of the class soldiered on and were mostly associated with coal traffic and merry-go-round trains.
Class 56s could be found in action all over Britain, though were perhaps not so frequent visitors to either Scotland or the far south-west. Some examples were sold for further use and could be seen working in France.
In later years the whole fleet were allocated to the maintenance depot at Toton, within a few miles of Nottingham, from where they operated across the whole country. The end for them came when they were superseded by more efficient, cheaper to maintain locomotives.
This action-packed DVD portrays the Class 56s at work in their declining years at a wide variety of locations on the British Railway network, plus on preserved lines and in France working for Fertis.
