This award-winning documentary programme is about the former Midland Railway (MR) Settle and Carlisle line across the Pennines. It was filmed in the 1960s by Peter Boocock. The route begins at Hellifield and makes its way north through famous locations such as the following (some, but not all, of which are featured in this programme): -
- Settle Junction
- Horton-in-Ribblesdale
- Ribblehead (with its viaduct)
- Blea Moor Tunnel
- Dent
- Rise Hill Tunnel
- Hawes Junction & Garsdale
- Moorcock Tunnel
- Shotlock Hill Tunnel
- Aisgill Summit
- Birkett Tunnel
- Kirkby Stephen
- Crosby Garrett
- Helm Tunnel
- Ormside
- Appleby
- Long Marton
- New Biggin
- Culgaith
- Culgaith Tunnel
- Waste Bank Tunnel
- Langwathby
- Little Salkeld
- Lazonby Tunnel
- Lazonby & Kirkoswald
- Baron Wood Tunnels
- Armthwaite Tunnel
- Armthwaite
- Cotehill
- Upperby
Titled trains between London and Scotland were hauled over the route by 'Peak' class diesels, later to be class 45 and class 46. Track relaying is shown at Dent and the severe winter of 1962 / 1963 is graphically depicted. Of course, there's plenty of steam locomotive action.
