Filmed in the 1960s, this is a nostalgic look at Retford during the steam age and the coming of the diesels. Retford had one of the busiest flat crossings in the country with the ex-Great Central line bisecting the East Coast Main Line, with a frequent flow of freight traffic.
Retford station on the East Coast Main Line (ECML) was popular with enthusiasts because the famous flat crossing could be seen from the end of the platform, plus there were excellent views of the steam locomotive depot from the down platform. Add to that the LNER Pacifics, and later the Deltics, thundering northwards and it is obvious why Retford station was a magical place for rail fans in the early 1960s.
As well as scenes around Retford, including the two steam sheds, we travel in the cab of a steam hauled stopping train from Retford to Sheffield Victoria.
