This programme is a celebration of the first two decades in preservation of the Mid-Hants Railway, otherwise known as the 'Watercress Line'. In the early days it was part of the London & South Western Railway (LSWR), became part of the Southern Railway (SR) and was finally closed in BR days. Mostly it was a country railway, but occasionally it saw diverted express trains hauled by Bulleid's Pacific steam locomotives.
Rare archive footage shows the line when it was part of the BR network, in the final years of operation up to the final closure in February 1973. Attention then turns to the preservation era with footage of the early days, most memorably of the line's re-opening in April 1977.
