Zanzibar Slavery and the Royal Navy

Few people realise that Zanzibar and the surrounding area was a centre for the slave traffic to Arabia and India. This book deals with the slave trade, the design of the slave ships and the Royal Navy's brave actions to prevent this trade in human misery.

The book also deals with the political situation in Zanzibar, including rule by Portugal, rule by Oman and protection by Britain. In the late 19th century the political situation worsened and the Royal Navy found itself involved in a series of short conflicts in East Africa and in Zanzibar itself. This book traces the development of these situations through narrative, sketches and photographs.

Fortunately there was a photographer on hand who recorded the local scene, both before and after the Ropyal Navy's action. This valuable collection forms the basis of the book. Even in black and white, the portraits of the Sultans reveal their splendid majesty, though the great majority of the photographs are everyday street scenes of Zanzibar.

Appendices cover profiles of military personnel, relevant medals, extracts from Warship logbooks and profiles of the warships themselves.
